Heidi gets strong start

•Boerboom has a good first day

It was a rough day for the Minneota golf team ­— but a great day for Heidi Guttormsson.
While the team floundered with a 376 in fifth place after the first round of Class A Golf, 35 strokes out of first, Guttormsson was making a run for a state individual title.
Her first nine holes was a mediocre 42, placing her in 12th place — but her second nine was a scorching hot 36 for an 18-hole score of 78 after the first day.
The Pebble Creek Course in Becker is a par 72 so Guttormsson was just six strokes under par. Her second 36 was an even par.
Only Emily Doeden of Park Christian had a better score — a 35, while Sophie Gray, a junior veteran from Legacy Christian Academy had the only other 36.
Guttormsson was in third place, just four strokes out of first indvidually after the first round.
Callie Wersal of Springfield had a pair of 37’s to lead the field with a 74 with Gray second at 76, two strokes ahead of Guttormsson.
Unfortunately, while Guttormsson was burning up the final nine, her teammates were no where to be found.
Senior Nicole Evers pulled three strokes off her first nine but still ended with a 49046 for a first-day total of 95. She was mired in 42nd place.
Laura Knutson was in 50th with a pair of 50’s for a 100 score and Brooklynn Downing was 61st with a 51-52 for 103 top out the Vikings top four.
The other two were: Allison Citterman with a good first round of 47, but a 62 the second niner for a109 and 72nd place and Carolyn Hoffmann 75th with a 55-57 for 112.
After the first day, Springfield led the Class A girls with a score of 341. Defending champ Fillmore Central was only seven strokes behind.

Boerboom’s strong showing
Minneota’s Nolan Boerboom made a strong showing the first day of the two-day Class A Boys Golf Meet at Becker.
Boerboom shot a pair of 42’s for a first day total of 82.
That put him 20 strikes behind leader Tommy Braaten of Blooming Prairie with a 19-hole 68.
Boerboom was tied for 29th place with two others.
The Minneota ninth grader is the only Viking boy in the state meet.
Brady Madsen of MACCRAY was in fourth place with a 76. He shot a 36 and a 40.  Henry Roth of Lac qui Parle Valley was tied for ninth with a 78 and teammate Harrison Patzer shot an 81 for 16th place.Dawson-Boyd’s Tyler Lund was in 19th with an 82 and he was tied with five others.
After the first day of the boys meet, the team scores were: 1. Mahnomen/Waubun 316; 2. Sleepy Eye United 330; 3. Mounds Park Academy 331; 4. Lac qui Parle Valley 334; 5. Mesabi East 339; 6. Blooming Prairie, 347; 7. Ottertail Central 348; 8. Westbrook-Walnut Grove 359.
