Anhalt walk-off in 8th
gives Vikings the win
Tessah Anhalt broke out of a hitting slump with a walk-off single with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Minneota/Canby a 5-4 win over Lac qui Pare Valley on Thursday.
The Vikings (7-7) trailed 3-0 before knotting the game with a three-run rally in the home half of the fifth inning.
The score remained 3-3 into the eighth inning when the Eagles scored to take a 4-3 lead.
Minneota/Canby then rallied for two runs. With one out, AshleeAnn Cole Frazeur got things started with a single. Kenadi Arndt then reached on an error with Frazeur advancing to third. Dakota Hennen then doubled to score Frazeur with the tying run. Rachel Fairchild was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Anhalt drove a pitch into the gap in right-center field to score Arndt with the winning run.
"It was such a fun game," said Minneota/Canby coach Heidi Louwagie. "Both teams played well and the game just flowed so nicely."
Brooke DeSmet hurled all eight innings for the win. She allowed seven hits, while walking one and striking out three. Taylor Shelstad took the loss for the Eagles. She walked two and struck out six.
"Brooke was a little down on herself that she only struck out three, but I reminded her that her job this year was to simply throw strike and let the defense do their job."
The Vikings played error-free behind Desmet for the first time this season.
"The girls played like we knew they could," said Louwagie. "We saw the team play like this in the first two games of the season and then kind of fell into a hitting- and error-filled slump for a while. It was so great to see all of the components come back together.
Pesch, Frazeur and Kiersyn Hulzebos had two hits apiece for the Vikings. Pesch drove in three of the five runs. Faith Myhre, Joelle Otto and Anhalt had the other hits.
Brandi Meyer and Jalyn Lee had two hits each for the Eagles.
