Marshall's Lance drafted No. 3 by 49ers

It was a little bit of a surprise to most analysts and NFL draft experts when Commissioner Roger Goodell read the name Trey Lance as the No. 3 pick by the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday.
When the 49ers moved up in the draft by trading two first-round and a third-round draft pick to the Miami Dolphins, most assumed it was to select Mac Jones of Alabama.
Even Lance himself seemed at a loss when he wiped away the tears from his eyes before placing a 49ers cap on his head and heading to the stage.
Lance grew up in Marshall and wanted to play quarterback in college. But few schools regarded him as a quarterback prospect. So he chose North Dakota State, the same school where Carson Wentz enjoyed a stellar career.
Lance first started playing quarterback in middle school and by the time he was a senior at Marshall High School, he was regarded as the top quarterback prospect in the state. Despite a strong desire to play for the Minnesota Gophers, coaches wanted Lance to switch positions to wide receiver or defensive back. So he moved on.
Lance's belief in his own abilities paid off as he went 17-0 as a starter for NDSU, including a national championship. Lance, who turns 21 on Sunday, threw 30 touchdowns and only one interception in his career. As a redshirt freshman in 2019 season, he threw 28 touchdown passes without an interception, an NCAA record for most passing attempts in a season without a pick. He threw for 2,786 yards and rushed for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns.
