Minneota wins twice in Redwood Triangular
Minneota rolled over Fulda/Murray County Central 65-9 and Redwood Valley 53-27 on Tuesday night at the Redwood Valley Triangular.
"I thought the guys wrestled really well tonight and came together as a team," said Coach Matt Myrvik. "We have some guys going through some illness and some injuries, and guys have stepped up to do all they can to help the team with no questions asked."
Nine Minneota wrestlers won both of their matches, including Conner Sik, who recorded his first varsity wins. Others going 2-0 were Peyton Gillund, Eric Carrasco, Truman Wambeke, Zack Fier, Kade Lozinski, Jonah Gruenes, Blake Reiss, and Hudson Scholten.
“Along with them, seventh-grader Kyler Lozinski stepped up to help the team in his first varsity action, instead of us forfeiting a weight class (against Redwood Valley) due to the flip," said Myrvik.
"With losing the flip, we thought it may come down to a few points. And not forfeiting really benefits the team." Fulda/Murray County Central was unable to field a full squad and forfeited six weight classes.
Plus, Minneota also amassed five pins and a technical fall in that win. The Vikings notched seven pins, a technical fall and a forfeit against the host team.
"Troy Van Keulen wrestled really well against a tough Carter Brandt, keeping the match within striking distance before giving up a 7-0 decision," said Myrvik. "Jayden Gamrak wrestled the No. 3-ranked heavyweight in AA and lost by a fall, but not before taking him down for the first time all year and really pushing the pace in the first period."
