Preston Nuy got doused with water after pitching his American Legion team to a championship.

Nuy pitches depleted Minneota to Legion 'Crown'

•Beat Montevideo, 4-0 to advance.
“That’s the Preston Nuy we all know,” said fill-in Coach J.D. Pesch after Nuy threw a four-hit shutout and beat Montevideo, 4-0 to earn a spot in the next round of the playoffs.

The odds may have been against them.
With the coach gone with some of his players on a mission trip, Minneota was facing an uphill battled against Montevideo in the District 7 Southwest Sectional Championship game.
But it would have been a big mistake to count them out — especially with Preston Nuy showing determination and a pretty good fastball.
“That’s the Preston Nuy we all know,” said fill-in Coach J.D. Pesch after Nuy threw a four-hit shutout and beat Montevideo, 4-0 to earn a spot in the next round of the playoffs.
“And what did Nuy get has his reward? He had a jug of water dumped on him, thank you!
Minneota earned a spot in the upcoming “best of three” playoffs Tuesday July 18 and Thursday July 20 against the Southeast Section Champ.
“When he’s on, he’s phenomenal,” Coach Pesch said about Nuy. Sunday, “He was phenominal.”
“I was hitting the hole a lot, mostly with fastballs. I used the curve once-in--a-while,” Nuy said.
Minneota called on Junior Legion players like Landon Rolbiecki, Sam Buysse and Grady Moorse to fill in the holes for the missing players. And Everett VanHecke was inserted in the designated hitter spot.
And all performed well.
“They played well,” said the coach, adding, “When I went to sleep last night I was thinking about the exciting win,” he said.
And he had toughts about the others called up to fill in. “This is why we started Junior Legion baseball. These kids have been playing a lot of baseball and they were ready."
Minneota committed just one error all day and while they got just four hits, they made them count. In the fourth inning, Austin DeVlaeminck doubled, Thomas Hennen sacrificed and got on base. Henry Pesch singled and Nuy singled and the three runs scored.
They added an insurance run in the fifth off Montevideo pitcher Christian Kanten.  Mark Laleman dumped a soft double into right field and scampered home on a sacrifice fly by DeVlaeminck for the 4-0 lead.
Nuy made it stand up with his sterling performance on the mound.
Despite pitching well, Nuy said, “I had confidence in all our players. They’ve all played at several levels already.”
Montevideo played two games Saturday, beating Madison 15-14, then Cottonwood, 20-7 to come through the losers bracket to play Minneota for the championship
“I’m so happy. I am so proud of you guys,” said Pesch.
The next level will also have to be played without the kids who are on the trip. But Pesch will pit his team against the Southeastern Champ, probably in an away game Tuesday and at home for one or two games on Thursday, depending on what is needed.
