Cole Sanow broke through for 191 yards and two touchdowns.

Vikings end regular season undefeated

•Beat Lac qui Parle Valley, 48-14

Cole Sanow ran for 191 yards and Alex Pohlen passed for 231 yards as Minneota beat Lac qui Parle Valley, 48-14 Wednesday night.

They ended the regular season undefeated at 8-0 and will face Yellow Medicine East at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Minneota in the first round of the Section 5A Playoffs.

Sanow, a sophopomore, got his 191 yards on 13 carries and he scored two touchdowns, both seven-yard run.

"Cole has been running hard," said Coach Chad Johnston.

While two long breaks by Lac qui Parle Valley broke the back of the Vikings defense, Coach Johnston wasn't displeased with his defense.

"We've got to know the situations," he said, adding, "There was a little letdown." An 80-yard kickoff runback by Korbin Kells and 59-yard touchdown pass from Kells to Evan Benson caught the Vikings napping.

"There was a little lack of effort and we got caught sleepin'," the coach said.

When Lac qui Parle kicked off the second half with an onside kick and recovered — they drove the ball to the one and a half hyard line. After three plays they were about a half yard away from scoring.

That's when the Viking defense kicked in.

They with-stood the charge four tries at the end zone and held.

Coach Johnston called it, "Our Hog Prevent Defense."

He put his biggest players in the line and squeezed the center — and it worked.

"They are a special group," the coach said.

Led by linebacker Shawn Buysse, lineman T.J. Esping and Lucas Bot, the entire corp smashed Lac qui Parle runner Peyton Mortenson to the ground for a memorable "goal line stand."

The Vikings took over on the half-yard line and drove the ball 99 1/2 yards upl field to score on a 12-yard run by Isaac Hennen.

It was 41-7 and except for the final touchdown by Lac qui Parle Valley, it was all over.

Sanow had scored the first touchdown on a seven-yard run and he scored the last one the same way — from seven yards out.

Quartrback Pohlen had his stamp all over this game, hitting18 of 23 passes for 231 yards and a 15-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Hennen.

Hennen, with six receptions and 71 yards and Thomas Hennen with five catches for 84 yards were Pohlen's top targets.

Defensively, Cole VanOverbeke had a sack and Landon Abraham added a tackle for loss among his nine tacles. Shawn Buysse from the linebacker position added 11 tackles; Logan Sussner had a fumble recovery and Brant Buysse intercepted a pass.

Minneota had an 86 percent first down conversion rate and Lac qui Parle Valley just 25 percent. And the Vikings had 532 total yards to 186 for the Eagles.

"We did a lot of good things tonight ... a lot of good things," Coach Johnston said.

He said the Eagles, "Have a good running back in (Peyton) Mortenson", who rushed for 84 yards. "They (Lac qui Parle Valley) had a definite plan (against us). Their quickness bent us — but we didn't break," the coach said.

Minneota ended the season 8-0 and Lac qui Parle Valley 4-4.
