(Result Dec. 11 at Minneota)
Minneota held off a second-half rally by Yellow Medicine East and won its opener, 64-61 on Saturday afternoon in Minneota.
The game was scheduled for Friday, but was postponed until Saturday due to a snowstorm that produced 4.5 inches in Minneota.
The Vikings got balanced scoring with four players reaching double figures. Cale Sorensen notched a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Sawyer DeSmet added 11 points and six rebounds; Max Rost had 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals; Anthony Rybinski had 10 points and five rebounds; Garet DeBoer finished with eight points and four rebounds; Ryan Dalager notched six points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals; and Peyton Sheik had five points and six rebounds.
"We didn't shoot very well and we shot too many threes," said Minneota coach Dave Busselman, referring to the team's 1-for-20 showing from beyond the arc. "But we rebounded well and got 74 shots."
One of the reasons for the poor shooting was the Vikings got a late start to the season because the football team reached the state championship. Yellow Medicine East (0-3) was playing its third game of the season.
Minneota trailed 17-16 before going on a 12-0 run for a 29-16 halftime lead. YME then poured in 45 points in the second half, but were never able to take the lead.
Owen Torvik led all scorers with 28 points for the Sting. Bryce Sneller and Nikson Knapper had 13 points apiece.
