(Result Friday, Dec. 30)
The Vikings (1-2) earned their first win of the season under first-year coach Chad Johnston, holding off a late rally by the Patriots (0-4).
This was the first of six games played in the Borch's Sporting Goods Holiday Classic in the R/A Facility on the Southwest Minnesota State University campus.
Peyton Sheik had 16 first-half points and finished with a double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Vikings. Ryan Dalager pumped in 20 points to go along with four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Sheik and Dalager each drained three treys.
Max Rost added 17 points, eight assists, five steals and four rebounds. Anthony Rybinski scored seven points and hooked eight rebounds, Lucas Rybinski had seven points and four rebounds, and Sawyer DeSmet had two points and eight rebounds. DeSmet was plagued by foul trouble, limiting his time on the court, and eventually fouled out with 4:34 remaining in the game.
The Vikings got off to a solid 16-7 start as Dalager and Sheik each sniped for a pair of three-pointers.
Minneota built its biggest lead of the game early in the second half, 52-33 when Sheik and Dalager had consecutive steals that led to coast-to-coast layups.
The Patriots, who had 16 turnovers in the first half and just three in the second half, methodically whittled away at the deficit and made it a two-possession game at 73-68 before running out of time and were forced to foul. The Vikings cashed 18 of 26 free throws in the game.
Minneota had 12 of its 17 turnovers in the second half.
Beau Bakken led the Patriots with 18 points and eight rebounds. Brock Harnack had 17 points and Sawyer Bosch had 12.
