Vikings sweep Lakeview to open season
Ava Larson hurled a no-hitter and Madison Hennen and AshleeAnn Cole each homered as Minneota/Canby opened the season with a doubleheader sweep of Lakeview on Monday in Minneota.
The Vikings won the opener 15-0 as AshleeAnn Cole had a triple and an inside-the-park homer to drive in three runs, backing Larson's four-inning no-hitter with nine strikeouts.
In the second game, the Vikings prevailed 19-7 as Hennen cleared the fence with a two-run home run in the first inning, and a run-scoring single in the fifth. The eighth-grader also earned the win in the circle on a six-hitter with 11 strikeouts.
"The girls played great, and I was happy to be able to play all 16 girls in the two games," said coach Heidi Boerboom. "Our hitting was strong, and we ran the bases aggressively. Ava and Madison both had a super start to the season."
The Vikings parlayed six hits and nine walks into the 15 runs in the opener. Morgan Moorse had a double that drove in three runs in the first inning. Faith Myhre also had a double.
Dakota Pesch went 2-for-3, including a triple, and scored four runs. Lexi Sanow also had two hits.
The games were originally scheduled to be played on Tuesday but were moved up one day because of inclement weather in the forecast.
