Defense shines in win
Minneota 40, KMS 33
(Result Thursday, Jan. 12)
Despite shooting only 25 percent from the field and a dismal 37 percent from the free-throw line, the Vikings (7-3) utilized a tenacious defense to force KMS (10-3) into 18 turnovers and a season-low 33 points.
Grace Hennen dropped in 14 points, 10 of those coming in the first half, and grabbed eight rebounds for Minneota. Kenadi Arndt added 11 points. Ireland Stassen, who had an off-night shooting and scored a season-low five points, pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds and made four steals.
After falling behind 7-6, the Vikings ran off 10 unanswered points and never trailed again. A low post basket by Arndt started the run. Hennen and Stassen then hit back-to-back three-pointers, and Megan Krog capped the run with bank shot basket.
Leading 40-24 late in the game, KMS tried to rally back with a 9-0 run on a basket by Elsa Gjerde and then seven straight points from Acelynn Hacker, but it was too little too late.
Hacker led the Fighting Saints with eight points. Madelynn Luft, a 6-1 sophomore, had seven points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Minneota made only three baskets in the second half, while hitting 5 of 11 free throws.
