Vultures fall to Worthington in 10th, 3-2

Worthington scored on two walks and an error in the top of the 10th inning and held on for a 3-2 victory over the Minneota Vultures last Friday at K.P. Kompelien Field in Minneota.
"We played a very solid game against a good Worthington team," said coach J.D. Pesch.
The loss spoiled stellar performances on the mound by Minneota starter Peyton Sheik and reliever Isaac Pohlen. Sheik worked the first six innings and allowed six hits and two unearned runs, while walking two and striking out six. Pohlen hurled the final four innings and did not allow a hit. He walked three and struck out three.
"I was very happy with our pitchers and their mound presence, as we did a really good job holding runners on and working our pickoffs to second base," said Pesch. "We had two at second base, one in the top of the ninth when their leadoff hitter reached second base with no outs."
Worthington's winning run in the 10th was the result of consecutive walks and an error.
"We were unable to get a couple of bunts down to mover runners in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings," Pesch said.
Minneota got eight hits off four Worthington pitchers, who combined for 10 walks and 14 strikeouts. Sheik, Jack Lacek and Keaton Jurrens had two hits apiece. Alex DePestel and Joe Voit each had a hit.
The Vultures scored in the first inning on two walks and two hit batsmen. DePestel was hit with the bases loaded and one out to force home the run.
Minneota tied the game 2-2 in the home half of the third inning when DePestel reached on an error, advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on a bunt single by Jurrens. DePestel the scored on another passed ball.
The Vultures threatened to take the lead in the fifth inning, recording four hits, but were unable to score. With one out, Jurrens singled but was thrown out at third trying to advance on Sheik's single to right field. Voit and Lacek followed with singles to load the bases, but a strikeout ended the threat.
The Junior Legion plays at Montevideo tonight (Thursday) at 6 p.m. Playoffs begin Tuesday, July 20.
