Wente jumps first; Team takes second
The Canby-Minneota boys flexed their muscles Monday at the SDSU track meet in Brookings, moving up 11 places from a year ago and finishing second to Sioux Falls Christian.
Carter Wente was the lone winner for C-M, finishing first in the triple jump in 40-0. Wente also finished fourth in the 110 hurdles in :16.44 and fourth in the 300 hurdles in :44.34.
Isaac Hennen was beaten in the long jump, finishing second in 19-8, one inch behind Jhett Prins of Webster, SD.
Hennen was also seventh in the 200 dash in :24.56. The boys’ 4x400 relay team of Riley Kockelman, Jaden Kindopp, Cole VanOverbeke and Jared Josephson came in second in a time of 3:47.90.
Sioux Falls Christian was first in 3:34.71.
The boys team showed great balance by finishing with 12 top-10 finishes on the day. Sioux Falls Christian, a perennial South Dakota powerhouse, amassed 144 points to win the boys’ 24-team meet.
Canby-Minneota finished with 51 points.
The Canby-Minneota girls placed seventh among 20 teams with 44 points after finishing fourth a year ago.
Deubrook Area won the girls’ meet with 81 points.
The Canby-Minneota girls had 11 top-10 finishes, including runners-up in the 4x800 relay with Kameron King, Abby Rost, Faith Traen and Grace Drietz finishing in 10:47.92. Deubrook Area won the event in 10:21.44.
The Canby-Minneota girls also had a trio of third-place finishes.
Traen was third in the 3200 run with a time of 12:53, Norah King was third in the shot put with a throw of 35-4, and Drietz was third in the 1600 run in 5:40.87. All three of the Canby-Minneota relay teams finished in the top 10.
Besides the aforementioned 4x800 finish, the 4x400 team of Delaney Houseman, Kameron King, Kalli Jelen and Lizzy Gillingham was fourth in 4:28.11. And the 4x100 team of Cassidy Hunt, Houseman, Jelen and Gillingham was sixth in :55.04.
Kameron King was also fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of :19.32. Jelen came in eighth and Gillingham 10th in the 200 dash with times of :28.81 and :28.84, respectively.
Also, Aidyn Bruns was 10th in the high jump in 4-6 and Makenzie Ruether came in 10th in the 1600 run in :52.70.
On the boys’ side, the 4x400 relay team of Anthony Wollum, Jared Josephson, Jalyn Ufkin and Riley Kockelman was fourth in a time of 9:00.87.
In the pole vault, C-M saw Cameron Anderson place fifth with a vault of 9-6, while Noel Swedzinski was 10th with an 8-6 vault. Besides Wente winning the triple jump, Kindopp was seventh in that event with a 36-5.
In the 800 run, Josephson’s time of 2:13.36 placed him eighth, while Ufkin came in 10th in 2:17.12. Kockelman finished eighth in the 1600 run in 5:02.33.
