Dear Editor,

It saddens us to report that we have exhausted our search of junior girls at MHS, and for the first time in many years, Minneota American Legion Auxiliary Unit 199 will NOT be sending a girl from Minneota to the Girls State Program at Bethel University June 10-16.

The stated objectives of Minnesota Girls State are as follows: To develop leadership and pride as American citizens; To educate citizens about our system of government; To instill a greater understanding of Americanism; and lastly, To stimulate a desire to maintain our democratic government process.

To be told that NO GIRL is interested in being a part of this program IS A FRIGHTENING THING!!! Are we so caught-up in athletic programs, or is it just a general feeling of apathy in our country about anything relating to government that has trickled down to our town of Minneota?

Both are points to ponder for sure, when we look to our future as citizens and future leaders for America. So where do we go from here?

Our $300 registration fee, that isn't refundable, will be offered to a girl NOT from Minneota that is on a waiting-list and hoping to be able to attend!

That is my bit of brightness after this exhausting search locally. And of course, there is always a new class of junior girls next year at Minneota High School.
