Myrvik receives Broyles Award for Asst. Coach of Year
Matt Myrvik admits he wasn't in his comfort zone while receiving the Frank Broyles Award for Assistant High School Football Coach of the Year at a banquet last week in Little Rock, Arkansas.
"I'm not one to wear a suit and tie," he said with a smile. "In fact, that wasn't even my suit. I borrowed it from someone."
Myrvik feels more at home wearing a polo shirt and a baseball cap than he does with a necktie and suit.
Myrvik, the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for the Minneota football team, made the three-hour flight to Arkansas with his wife, Patty, for the two-day banquet at the Capitol Hotel in Little Rock on Dec. 5-6.
The Broyles Award recognizes the outstanding high school and college assistant football coaches in the country over those two days. Myrvik was awarded the Minnesota Assistant Coach of the Year Award during the Minnesota High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame banquet this past April. It was then that Myrvik was informed that he would be a Broyles Award recipient.
The high school portion of the Broyles Award began in 2018. The award was created to honor the legacy of Wilson Matthews, who was an assistant coach under Frank Broyles at the University of Arkansas from 1958-68. Myrvik "It does mean a lot. It's very humbling and I'm very appreciative of the selection," said Myrvik about receiving the award. "It justifies all the hard work and effort, and the scrifices the family has had to make. But to be honest, I wouldn't be in this position without all the coaches, players and alumni."
There were 21 high school coaches across the country honored with a Broyles Award.
Matt May of ESPN was the emcee of the program, which included a social hour, dinner and the awards ceremony on Dec. 5. Following a coach and spouse breakfast, the high school coaches were also recognized during the televised 27th annual college assistant coach awards ceremony on Dec. 6.
Myrvik, a 1995 graduate of Minneota High School, has been an assistant coach at Minneota for the past 26 years.
During his tenure here, the Vikings have appeared in nine state tournaments, including state championships in 2009, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2022.
Myrvik received a large plaque and banner, and was fitted for a ring that he will be receiving.
Myrvik also won the 2013 Minneota Football Coaches Association Butch Nash award for Outstanding Assistant Coach.
Myrvik is the Shipping and Receiving Manager at Borch's Sporting Goods in Marshall. He and his wife have three children.
