Timm ends library board tenure
For the past 30 years, Audrey Timm has held a permanent seat on the Minneota Public Library Board. Recently, she decided to vacate that seat.
"I thought it was time to let someone younger and more energetic take over," she said with a polite smile.
That doesn't mean she won't be available, if needed, however.
"I'll be around to put my two cents in," she laughed. "I will help if they need me." Timm was born and raised in Taunton, but has lived in Minneota for several years now.
She joined the nine-person library board and eventually was elected the president; a position she held for over five years. She was the last of the original board members to retire.
"We started our pie social during Boxelder Bug Days as a fundraiser for the library," she said. "That was when it was called Town and Country Days."
When asked what was her proudest moment as member of the library board, Timm didn't hesitate to think about her answer.
""We host a really nice sit-down banquet in the Opera Hall," she said. "That was right around the year 2000.
"We had around 85 to 90 people attend. I remember I cooked about 100 chickens breasts at my home. Bill Holm played the piano for our entertainment. The board served the meal. And I remember the men helped us get ready for the banquet and carried all the food and things up all those stairs."
The money from that fundraiser was used to purchase additional shelving for the library when it was still on the corner of First and Jefferson Streets.
The library board also began the Chocolate Affair held around Valentine's Day until the Friends of the Library took that over and have now become the main fundraisers for the library, including the recent elevator installation to make it easier to reach the second floor where the Opera Hall is located.
Timm's last day on the library board was July 2.
"I really enjoyed my time on the board," she said. "It was my second life. I just can't do the work anymore. We need someone with new ideas and we need to get the younger people involved."
Timm has always been an avid reader and will continue that interest following her retirement from the library board.
"I feel I am traveling through the books I read," she said. "I feel that I get to know the world."
