Vikings impressive in opener; finish second at Worthington
Despite having only seven entries, Minneota's speech team came in second at the Worthington Trojan meet on Saturday.
River Valley, which won the meet, finished three points ahead of Minneota although they had twice the number of competitors.
Joe Voit placed first in Extemporaneous Speaking, earning a top rank in all three of the rounds.
Extemporaneous Speakers draw questions and then have 30 minutes of prep time before having to respond to the judges. One of the questions was repeated in separate rounds in this meet. The two questions posed to the speakers was basically asking if discipline is too lax in schools and the other was how the Republicans' fighting in the House affects their party.
Cora Fischer was second in Great Speeches, Joey Clark second in Storytelling, Noah Harms second in Humorous Interpretation, Wyatt Pohlen second in Discussion, and Melanie Engels third in Storytelling.
"Melanie was in an unbreakable tie for second place but lost on a coin toss," said coach Kim Gades. "it was also the first time out for Jaelin Anderson as she rejoined the team this year after a couple of years out. The kids did a great job this weekend."
