Davidson home completely destroyed by fire Monday
The house of Peter Davidson was destroyed by fire around 2 p.m. last Monday afternoon. The origin of the fire is not known, but it is said that it started in a clothes closet. The house and practically all the furniture and clothing were destroyed. We understand that there were $2,600 worth of insurance, but that this does not nearly cover the loss.

Doc Seals give notice to new Senator Preus
Doc Seals says that Jake Preus is now about the same age that he, Seals, was when he came to Minneota. It was in 1875 that Doc came and he was then 38 years old. Preus will be 40 next August. Doc thinks that if Jake can hold the office of Senator as long as he, Doc, has held the office of Justice of the Peace in Minneota, it will prove that the public is satisfied with him.

Gislason attends Easter Star convention in St. Paul
Mr, W.B. Gislason, Worthy Matron of the local Eastern Star chapter, went to St. Paul Tuesday to attend the annual state convention of the Easter Star chapter.

Collins seriously injured in automobile accident
Ralph Collins, 32, the proprietor of the Fixit Shop in Minneota, was still in critical condition in Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis Wednesday as a result of injuries he sustained in an automobile accident in Marshall last Thursday evening. Madame Smith, who was riding in the automobile with him, suffered bruises and shock. The mishap occurred shortly after 10 a.m. on the west edge of Marshall. According to Marshall police, the automobile went out of control on the curve, went into the ditch and then hit a culvert and turned end over end. Collins was thrown about 30 feet from the car. Collins’ injuries are reported to be in the lower portion of his body that is paralyzed.

Taunton Fire Department installs fire siren in town
The Taunton Fire Department recently installed a fire siren in that village, it was announced this week. Two blasts from the siren will mean that there is a fire in the town, and three blasts will mean there is one in the country. One blast from the siren will be used to call the firemen to their meetings. The siren will also be blown once at noon and again at 6 p.m.

Jones recently appointed to Farm Help Aid for Minneota
K.E. Jones has been appointed representative in the Minneota community of the Division of Employment and Security. As such, under the jurisdiction of the state’s agency full-time office in Marshall, he will be a key figure in this community for the recruitment of farm help. Jones was appointed by Victor Christeau, Director of the Division of Employment and Security.

Canby blanks Minneota 8-0 behind Lemme’s 23 strikeouts
With 23 strikeouts to his credit, Lemme, a newly recruited Canby hurler, shut out Minneota’s ball team Sunday afternoon, the final count being 8 to 0 in a contest played there. The game was witnessed by a fair crowd who braves the cold and wind to see the opening battle of the Border League season. Lemme, who is from Watertown, allowed Minneota only five scattered hits. Minneota goes to Ghent next Sunday for the first game on the new diamond there.

Voters return incumbents to Minneota Board of Education
Incumbents Mrs. Kern Donaldson and Leonard W. Allen were each returned to positions on the local school board of education in the annual school election Tuesday evening, which attracted 49 voters to the polls. Mrs. Donaldson received 48 votes, while 42 were cast for Mr. Allen. Three other residents of the district each received one vote. Mrs. Donaldson will begin serving her second three-year term in July, while Allen will be starting on his 27th year.

Dairy cattle judging team receives awards at state FFA
The Minneota High School’s FFA Dairy Cattle judging team won awards during the State FFA convention on May 6-8 at the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul campus. The team was placed in the Silver section and the following were awarded ribbons: Bryce Kosmalski, gold; Mike Hennen, silver; and Vince Laleman, bronze. The Minneota team won the right to enter the Minnesota contest by taking the district contest held April 7 in Brookings, SD.

Four seniors graduating with “Highest Honors”
Graduation with “Highest Honors” will be accorded four members of the Minneota High School class of 1973 who have demonstrated academic excellence in attaining scholastic averages of 94 and above during their high school careers. Named to this honor are: Carol Fier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Fier; Diane Applewick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elden Appelwick; Keven Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Peterson; and Joseph Bottelberghe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Bottelberghe. “High Honors” were awarded to Bernard DeCock, Heidi Johnson, Dawn Schwartz, Mary Ann Moorse, and Edna Eischens.

Minneota Memorial Day services to start with parade
Plans for Memorial Day have been set for Monday, May 25, starting with a parade led by Minneota American Legion Post 199. Participants will meet at 9 a.m. at the Minneota Public School parking lot, parade down Monroe to Jefferson Streets and then down to the American Legion building where a Memorial Day service will be held. The service will conclude at Memorial Park on Highway 68.

Iris Club to host its annual Iris Show June 3
The unusually warm temperatures have caused real havoc for members of the Minneota Area Iris Club. It has forced them to take a close look at their gardens, and move up the 37th annual Iris Show to June 3 this year. Each year it is a guess as to when the flowers will reach their peak and the Iris Show plans its date for the Iris Show accordingly. The theme this year for the show is “Iris on the Job”. Six classes are open for specimen stalks, along with several classes of arrangements, open to all ages.

Minneota Police Department will begin trapping stray cats
The Minneota Police Department is live-trapping stray cats from May 18 to June 8. If you have a cat, make sure it is licensed and tagged. All stray cats will go to the pound in Marshall. If you are having problems with stray cats in your area, please contact the Minneota Police Department.
