Wild critters in town

I get a lot of calls regarding raccoons, skunks, and opossums wandering around town and in people’s yards. Here is some information to consider before calling the police on your visitors.

(1) Just because these animals are out during the day does not mean they are sick. Signs to look for are a lack of fur, walking in circles or being unable to walk.
(2) Don’t leave dog food or cat food out. Wild animals are opportunistic and will eat what they can find. If they associate your property with a free meal, they will keep coming back. Also, keep your garbage cans closed.
(3) Walk around your home and look for places where wild animals might like to nest and take action to prevent them from doing so. They especially like living under decks, under sheds, and in open outbuildings.

We live in a rural environment and should expect to see wild animals in town. I will not trap or kill a wild animal simply because it is in your yard. The best thing to do is to prevent wild animals from seeing your property as an inviting and safe space.
