THE CHIEF'S VIEW

Golf cart/ATV reminders

Minneota is special for many reasons. One reason is that we allow golf carts and ATVs to be driven in town on public roadways by permit following specific rules.
The state of Minnesota prohibits the use of golf carts and ATVs on the road unless the local government makes an ordinance and permits it. In Minneota, we allow people to purchase an annual $20 permit for their golf cart and ATV. Requirements for a permit include an inspection for a slow-moving vehicle sign, vehicle insurance, muffler (if gas-operated), and rearview mirrors.
All drivers/operators of a golf cart or ATV must have a valid driver’s license. This means that you must be at least 16 years old to operate a golf cart or ATV on public roadways. A driver-learner permit is NOT sufficient.
It is also important to know that if you have an ATV, it must also have current registration from the DNR. Violations of the ordinance can result in a citation and a revocation of your permit. You can stop in at City Hall to pick up an application for a permit along with a copy of the ordinance so that you can read all of the rules that were not listed above.
