Ryan Dalager, a senior-to-be at Minneota, hurled a five-hit shutout as the Minneota Mudhens stymied the Ortonville Rox 5-0 in a key Land O' Ducks league game Friday in Ortonville.
"The guys played well against a good Ortonville team, which handed us our only league loss last year," said Mudhens player/manager Tyson Sonnenburg. "It was a big win to help position us in a good spot for regions, as well."
The Mudhens were missing several starters due to previous commitments, including starting pitchers Danny Hennen and Jacob Hennen, plus starting catcher Austin DeVlaeminck and infielder Ben Skorczewski.
Brock Buysse went 3-for-3, including two doubles, and drove in a run for the Mudhens. Austin Buysse and Peyton Gillund each went 2-for-5 and drove in two runs. Sonnenburg was also 2-for-5.
Dalager, Alex Pohlen and Tate Walerius added a hit each.
Dalager, a right-hander, walked four and struck out six in going the distance for the win.
"With two of our pitchers missing it was nice for Ryan to be able to go all nine innings and put us in a good position," said Sonnenburg. "He pitched great and kept the hitters on their toes all game by mixing his pitches well."
The Mudhens took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Dalager singled, advanced on a walk to Brock Buysse, and scored on Gillund's single.
In the third inning, Dalager walked and moved to third on Brock Buysse's double. Austin Buysse then plated both runners with a two-out single for a 3-0 lead.
Gillund singled in another run in the sixth to make it 4-0, plating Tate Walerius, who doubled and advanced to third on a single by Brock Buysse.
Brock Buysse doubled in the final run in the eighth inning, scoring Isaac Buterbaugh, who walked and went to second on a groundout.
Buterbaugh moved to Minneota from Pennsylvania and recently joined the Mudhens.
