Heemeyer to step down as United Way president, CEO

Marcy Heemeyer, President and CEO of the United Way of Southwest Minnesota is leaving her role at the end of November. Heemeyer has accepted a position with North Star Mutual Insurance Company. The United Way Board of Directors will open a search for a new president and CEO in the near future.

“We cannot thank Marcy enough for the dedication, passion, enthusiasm and motivation she has given United Way of Southwest Minnesota and our communities over the past several years” said Amie Ascheman, board chair.

“She will be greatly missed by the staff, board, donors, volunteers and community partners. We look forward to following the success of her career and are hopeful and excited for the next chapter of United Way of Southwest Minnesota as we continue to unite people and resources to improve lives and strengthen communities in southwest Minnesota.”

Ascheman added, “Our board of directors holds great confidence the United Way is served by dedicated staff and supported by generous donors, strong partners and able volunteers both now and into the future.”

Ascheman and Amy Herrick, board vice chair, will lead the Transition and Search Committee for Heemeyer’s successor. “It has been an honor to lead the United Way of Southwest Minnesota these past (almost) six years and to serve the 35 communities we call home,” said Heemeyer.

“I’m proud of what we have accomplished together.

I’m convinced the United Way of Southwest Minnesota will continue to be an increasingly strong force in the non-profit sector, bringing innovative ideas and creating opportunities for local programs, initiatives and, most importantly, local people,” said Heemeyer.

During her time with United Way, she helped raise millions of dollars to create positive outcomes across southwest Minnesota; including setting the record for the highest campaign in the history of the organization.

She also guided United Way through a successful office relocation, integration of an online grant platform, launched the volunteer management system, earned the Charities Review Council Seal and facilitated poverty simulation experiences across the region.

Heemeyer also served as a leader throughout the United Way system on a state and national level; currently as the State Association of Minnesota United Way’s President and as a former member of the National Professional Council; an elite group of 40 United Way executives from across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

In 2017, she was a member of the planning committee for the International Community Leaders Conference and shared her professional experience on the big screen during the general assembly.
