51st Ivanhoe Kielbasa Days festivities kick off this week
The Minnesota State Fair serves new foods each year that you've probably never had in your life, so why not a local event, too?
If you've always wanted to try some new foods, Polska Kielbasa Days in Ivanhoe will be serving Polish dishes at its Ethnic Food Luncheon beginning at 11 a.m. p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13 at the VFW.
The 51st annual Polska Kiebasa Days celebration will be held Aug. 13-15.
There will be the familiar Polish sausage being served, but other items have names difficult to pronounce, but are familiar dishes.
Golabki, for example, is a cabbage roll. The cabbage leaves are wrapped around a filling such as pork, beef, onion, rice or barley.
Perogies are filled dumplings boiled in water. The perogies served at Polska Kielbasa Days are stuffed with things like potato, cheese and sauerkraut.
Ponczki (Paczki) is a delicious pastry-type dessert with apricots, prunes or chocolate.
That brings us to the most unfamiliar of dishes, Charnina (Czernina).
"It's duck blood soup served with noodles called Kluski," said Cindy Winter, who is the head of the Ethnic Food stand. "It might not sound good, but we sell out of it."
This year's Polska Kielbasa Days offer many games, events and entertainment for all ages. There will be a myriad of food and beverage choices over the three days as well.
The event kicks off at 8 a.m. on Saturday with a 5k Fun Run/Walk that begins and ends at the Lincoln Hi Elementary School.
Tournaments this year include softball, volleyball, golf, basketball, softball and bean bag.
Other contests will be kiddie races, diaper derby, antique tractor pull, kiddie tractor pull, Bingo, Distinguished Young Women, chili cook-off and kiddie water fights.
There will also be a craft vendor fair, inflatables, petting zoo, face painting, classic car show and a parade.
If food and beverages are the reason you like to attend events such as this, you won't be disappointed. Besides the Ethnic Food Luncheon, there will be a Shrimp Feed at Railroad Street Seafood, Minneota Area Mission Trip food stand, Loaded Fry/BBQ/Pulled Pork Sandwiches Stand, pork chop feed, Pie and Ice Cream Social, and a concession stand. There will also be a Bloody Mary Bar at the Ivanhoe Liquor Store, and $2 beer all weekend.
Entertainment will be provided by 10 Miles From Nowhere, Stones Throw, DJ and Karaoke as Gilson Field and the Ivanhoe Liquor Store.
So, head over to Ivanhoe and enjoy the fun and maybe even try the duck blood soup. It might just be everything it's quacked up to be.
