Chili Cook-off during Bug Days to benefit Prairie Home Hospice
The smell wafting through the air between the City Office Building and Veterans Park draws those attending Boxelder Bug Days like a magnet to a paper clip.
The 24th annual Johnny Tillemans Memorial Chili Cook-off is one of the more popular events during Bug Days. It will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10 this year from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The event, sponsored by Prairie Home Hospice, is named after Johnny Tilleman, a well-known owner of the former Silver Dollar Bar (see photo on Page 2) in Ghent who passed away in 2014. Tillemans' children, grandchildren and other family members have kept his legacy alive with this annual cook-off.
There were seven contestants last year and family members are hoping for more this year.
Tillemans' four daughters, Carey Doyscher, Lu Hinz, Deb Gilbertson and Sandy Doyscher, typically participate each year. Tillemans' great nephew, Jeremy Friedrichs of Glenwood, won the event in 2018 and 2019. The pandemic cancelled the event in 2020.
Carey Doyscher won the People's Choice Award last year with her elk chili recipe; the fourth time she has claimed that prize. Together with her husband, Pete, they annually win for Best Booth. Pete came in second place in People's Choice in 2021 and Friedrichs was third.
Those interested in participating can just show up at sunrise with their ingredients, cook stove and utensils and join in the fun. If you have any questions, call 507-337-0080. Beans are not allowed for the judges, but can be added for the public sampling.
Samples are sold for $1 or $3 for a bowl and the public can then vote on their favorite chili.
Proceeds benefit Prairie Home Hospice and Community Care.
