This receipt, once belonging to Gilbert Hammer, was for his paid one-year subscription to the Minneota Mascot for $2 in 1944. That's just under 4 cents per paper. We checked a few other prices for 1944. Gasoline was 21 cents per gallon, eggs were 45 cents a dozen, a ticket for a movie was 20 cents, and the average price of a new car was $850.
