An explosion on Thursday morning leveled this home east of Marshall and sent debris for several yards in every direction.

One dead, one injured in Marshall house explosion

Cause still unknown; blast felt for over two miles

In a scene reminiscent of a war zone, a house explosion outside of Marshall left one man dead and another woman injured last Thursday.
The entire home was leveled by the blast. A portion of a truss was one of the few things left standing following the explosion that occurred at 6:37 a.m.
According to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office, Gail Schipansky, 74, of Marshall died in the explosion. Nancy Schipansky, 71, was seriously injured and taken to the emergency room at Avera Hospital in Marshall where authorities say she is in serious, but stable condition.
Insulation from the home could be seen scattered in every direction for over 100 yards.
Debris could also be seen high atop the many trees surrounding the property 1 1/2 miles east of Marshall along State Highway 19. Many family members could be seen picking through the debris to collect any items of value."This is unbelievable," said one family member, who requested anonymity. "We don't know what happened or why, but I can't believe how the entire house exploded like this."
Volunteers were also picking up debris in fields east and west of the property.
An employee of the Ramada Inn in Marshall said she could hear and feel the blast from inside the building over two miles away.
"I thought an airplane had crashed nearby," she said.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office.
