Judges have trouble getting to debate here due to snow
Superintendent Kidder of Canby, Superintendent Sorensen of Tracy, and Rev. Brenne of Canby were all in Minneota on Monday evening to judge the high school debate between Minneota and Renville. Kidder and Rev. Brenne had trouble getting here from Canby due to the considerable snow. They had to shovel themselves out a number of times along the highway. Instead of driving back to Canby at the conclusion of the debate, they remained here overnight and went back up on the morning train, leaving their car here.
School here observes late President Woodrow Wilson
Pursuant to the Governor's proclamation making Wednesday a day of mourning for the late ex-president Woodrow Wilson, appropriate exercises were held that afternoon in the assembly room. A speech by G.B. Bjornson and a few songs constituted the observance. A program will also be held on Abraham Lincoln's birthday, Feb. 12. A prize-winning essay from one of the members of the senior class on the character of Lincoln will be read. The prize will be a bronze medal, which has been displayed in the window of Culshaw's Jewelry Store.

Local liquor sales down over $8,000 in last year
Sales of the Minneota Municipal Liquor Store were $8,581.33 less in 1948 than they were the previous year, according to the annual financial statement of the Village of Minneota. In 1948, sales at the local dispensary amounted to $85,258.18, while in 1947, receipts at the store were $93,839.71. Sales were $90,691.64 in 1946. Profit from operating the store in 1947 amounted to $16,010.70. The statement does not show how much profit was made in 1948.
Council delays action on petition on Legion building
Presented with a petition asking that the Village of Minneota take over the Legion building during a meeting on Monday night, the Village Council delayed action on these petitions until Thursday evening of this week. More than 200 people had signed the petition. When it postponed action on the petition, the Village Council asked that the Legion representatives appoint a committee to meet with them to discuss the problem. Meanwhile, Dr. E.J. Kerr, in a letter written to the Mascot, denied that he wanted to buy the Legion building for hatchery use. Rumors have been circulating that Dr. Kerr, by his amendment to the original wording of the petition in which he sought to prohibit the use of the building for the sale of liquor, was endeavoring to half the Village of Minneota from taking over the building so that he could purchase it.
Borson returns to take over as manager of MGT Oil Co.
Henry Borson has returned to this city as service station manager of the Minneota-Ghent-Taunton Cooperative Oil Company after an absence of five years. After serving as manager here for 12 years, Borson left in 1944 after accepting a position with Firestone Company of Minneapolis.
Anderson's Garage to hold Grand Opening
Anderson's Garage invites the public to attend its Grand Opening on Tuesday afternoon of next week. A colorful program, which will include the showing of two feature films, has been arranged by owners of the garage. A door prize will be awarded and free lunch will be served.

Jerry's Supply & Hobby Shop broken into and burglarized
A burglar or burglars entered Jerry's Supply and Hobby Shop sometime after 1:15 a.m. last Thursday morning and made off with a variety of articles valued at $700. They also took $2 that was left in the cash register. The burglary was noticed around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. Jerry Vlaminck said he believed the burglary was committed by locals "as they knew where everything was and re-locked all the cases and counters." Among the items taken were cameras, watches, hunting knives, cigarettes and socket wrenches.
Local youth killed in truck crash west of Prinsburg
Nicholas Flood, 17, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Flood of rural Minneota, was killed about 1:50 a.m. on Tuesday in an accident involving three semi-trucks. The accident occurred about two miles west of Prinsburg on Highway 7. The highway was shrouded by fog at the time of the accident. Also injured in the same accident was Paul Guza, 26, of Taunton. He was taken to the hospital in Willmar and released. Flood was a passenger in the truck which Guza was driving. Also killed in the accident was Chancey Adams, 60, of Pierre, SD, a driver of one of the trucks. Charles Brandt of Clinton, the driver of the third truck, was also injured. All three trucks were traveling east at the time of the accident. No other information was available.
Minneota firemen called out to fire north of town
Local fire fighters were called to the Delmo Kompelien home in north Minneota at about 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday for a fire that had started in some clothing in a closet. The fire was nearly extinguished by the time the firemen arrived. There was some fire and smoke damage to a few articles of clothing and also to the home.

Seniors planning evening of fun, food, entertainment
The Minneota Senior Citizens are planning an evening of good food and musical entertainment for this Thursday night and they would love to have you come. The event will be held at the Minneota Senior Center and is considered a fundraiser for the group. You can come anytime between 5-7 p.m. that evening for soup and sandwiches. At 7 p.m., the Callens family will entertain you with their music.
Lutheran Brotherhood steps in to help family following fire
Lyon County Lutheran Brotherhood Branch #8304 has stepped in to help the Virgil and Denise Buysse family after their recent house fire. Donations that are turned in to the Community First National Bank in Minneota will be matched by the Lutheran Brotherhood Branch to help this family at their time of need.
Ghent to host poetry, music event in Legion Hall
A gathering of poets, musicians, and lovers of poetry and music, has been set for the Ghent Legion Hall on Saturday, Feb. 13. Entitled "Cornstalk", this event is said to be a warm-up for Valentine's Day. The event is free to attend.
