Rost proves guards can crash boards, too

You don't generally expect your 5-7 guard to lead the team in rebounding on many nights, but that's the case with Abby Rost.
"Coming from the top of the key, many of my defenders do not expect me to crash the boards, so I can usually get a couple (rebounds) at the beginning of each game before they start to box me out," said the Minneota senior. "Also, I try to catch my defender off guard and slip in front of them to get good positioning."
Minneota head coach Chad Johnston said Rost's teammates also realize she is going after any rebound she can get.
"We were having practice one day and McKenna (Yost) took a shot from the outside and then stood her ground," Johnston said. "I yelled at her to follow her shot. McKenna explained to me that I've always insisted that someone needs to stay on the perimeter in case the other team gets the rebound and tries to start something quick downcourt."
Yost then responded to her coach: "Abby always crashes the boards".
"Her explanation was right. She proved me wrong on that one," Johnston laughed.
Rost has a knack for positioning and reading a carom off the rim. But being only 5-7 isn't always easy trying to pull down a rebounds against a big lineup.
Sometimes it is hard to try and rebound over the girls that are so much taller than me," Rost said. "But Jeren (Rost) does a nice job boxing them out and keeping them off the glass."
For the season, Rost averaged a team-high 7.6 rebounds per game. She led the team in rebounding in 17 of the 25 games this year, with a high of 11 (four times).
Not bad for a guard? Not bad for any position.
