Deja vu! Vikings keep rolling
Tell me if you've heard this one before. Minneota holds an opponent to under 100 yards of total offense, denies them a point on the scoreboard, while churning up and down the field with ease.
While just one of those accomplishments is hard enough to achieve during a single game, the Vikings have been doing almost every week.
The only surprising thing in Minneota's 50-0 whitewashing of Canby Friday night was that they were held scoreless in the opening quarter.
The Vikings quickly righted the ship right and scored three times in the second quarter and four times in the third quarter.
Junior quarterback Isaac Pohlen had another strong showing behind center, tossing three touchdown passes. He completed 9 of 14 passes for 189 passes.
"As a team, our chemistry keeps getting better each week," said Pohlen. "We trust each other that we will do our jobs. I also trust the coaches and their game plan. I believe in what they are trying to teach me, which has led me to become the football player I am."
Jonah Gruenes caught three passes for 108 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown.
Pohlen also connected with Cale Sorensen on a 29-yard scoring strike, and Max Rost on a 14-yard score.
Pohlen's older brother, Alex, was a standout quarterback for Minneota a few years ago.
"Alex and I have a special relationship. I have looked up to him my whole life and have always been proud of his accomplishments," said Pohlen. "I try to mirror my game to his by watching his film and asking him questions. He is not afraid to tell me when I am doing something wrong, but he also makes sure to tell me 'good job' when I do things right,."
Minneota's first touchdown came after Canby muffed a punt and Ryan Dalager pounced on the fumble, giving the Vikings the ball on the Canby 25. Five plays later, Conner Sik scooted in from a yard out for the score.
Minneota increased its lead to 14-0 on a seven-play 45-yard drive capped by a 10-yard TD run from Gruenes.
Pohlen then hooked up with Gruenes for 61-yard score and Andrew Lipinski ran in the conversion for a 22-0 lead.
AJ Josephson returned to the lineup after sitting out a week to rest a sore ankle, scored the first of four third-quarter TDs with a one-yard run. Josephson finished with 66 yards in 12 carries.
Sorensen and Rost then caught their TD passes, and reserve Sawyer DeSmet caught his first varsity touchdown on a two-yard pass from backup quarterback Ryan Dalager.
Peyton Gillund, one of the best kickers in the area, converted all six of his extra-point kicks.
The Vikings' defense had another sterling performance, limiting the Lancers to only 54 total yards and forced four turnovers, interceptions by Sorensen and Anthony Rybinski, and fumble recoveries by Dalager and Zack Fier.
All three phases of the Vikings' game -- offense, defense and special teams -- have been solid all season.
"We work hard and keep getting better each week," said Pohlen. "We are not satisfied with how good of a team we are now, and we know that we can get a lot better," Pohlen said. "We work hard in practice and keep learning new things each week, which had led us to put up high offensive scporing game all season.
"And I have to give credit to our defense. They have been playing at a high level all year. With how efficient they have been playing, we are able to get the ball back and have a lot more offensive plays."
Minneota (7-0) hosts Dawson-Boyd Wednesday at K.P. Kompelien Field. The Mascot goes to press on Wednesday morning, so look for the results of that game on our website and next week's paper.
