75 Years Ago-Aug. 7, 1942
Farewell Party in Swede Prairie
A farewell party was given for Fredolph Haroldson at the Swede Prairie Town Hall on Sunday evening. Several of his friends and neighbors were present to bid him good luck when he leaves for camp on August fourth. The evening was spent in dancing to music furnished by Van Dale’s and a midnight lunch was served.
Snowdrifts in Mid July?
Clarkfield — “It’s been cool — but snowdrifts along the curb in mid July? I must be seeing things,” muttered a local citizen one afternoon recently as they passed the new Lynner building. And well they might, for there lay a gleaming white snow drift at least ten feet long in the gutter, and it did not look as though it would melt either. Inquiry at the cold locker plant revealed that they were “defrosting plates” in the sharp freeze room.
Taunton infant baptized
The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. William Steinessen was baptized on Sunday, August 2, at the Sts. Cyriel and Methodius Catholic church by the Reverend Father John Pawelski. The infant was given the name Daniel John Steinessen. The sponsors were Miss Rachel Caron of Marshall and Edward Steinessen of Ghent.

Rotary letters go to Belgium, Netherlands
In a continuation of its “foreign letter” program, the Minneota Rotary club has completed a letter translated into Flemish by Mrs. Irene Rabaey and Mrs. Gertrude VanAltvorst of Minneota, for sending to Belgium and the Netherlands. The club will send 78 copies to Belgium and 156 to Holland. The letter describes the United States, the major features of this state and then pays more attention to Ghent and Minneota communities and the way farmers and their village brothers live and earn a living.
Barn, hay destroyed by fire
A 36x64 barn with lean-to and chopped hay (totaling about 3,000 bales) on the Jules Gossen farm six miles northeast of Minneota were destroyed by fire early last Thursday afternoon. It is believed that the fire started from spontaneous combustion in the hay.
Breaks leg in farm mishap
Michael Josephson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank A. Josephson, broke his left leg just above the ankle on Saturday at the Mrs. Joe Peterson farm. Mike was helping Dennis Gorecki unload oats when his foot caught in a chain that turns the elevator and in throwing him it caused the break. He was treated at the local clinic.
Minneota car wash open for business
In an advertisement printed on another page in this issue, Harold Friend announces that his Minneota Car Wash is now open for business. The two-stall wash is on Jefferson street in the business district across the street from the Legion building here.
25 Years Ago-Aug. 5, 1992
Retirement celebrated
Stella Smith was the guest of honor at a dinner/reception at Aunt Nellie’s Restaurant in Marshall on Monday. Mrs. Smith, a teacher in the Minneota Public School system for 24 years, has now retired. Mrs. Smith lives in Cottonwood and will be remembered for her loyal service to the students in the elementary department.
Pool to close on August 9; Kids will be bused to Canby
The Minneota swimming pool will be closing at 9 p.m., Sunday, August 9 so that work can begin on the new swimming pool. Due to this short season, kids will be bused to the Canby Swimming Pool.
The race is on
The mud bog races at Ghent on Sunday drew a good crowd of onlookers. The Southwest Minnesota Mud Bog Association ran the event, with vehicles racing in two-car heats. All types of vehicles can race, and snowmobiles were in competition before the heavier vehicles took over. This has become a popular new sport for racing fans of the area, and will be a featured event at Boxelder Bug Days in Minneota on September 12 and 13.
