75 Years Ago-Aug. 21, 1942

Mrs. Oscar Huso Dies

Word has been received her of the death of Mrs. Oscar O. Huso (nee Andelien Kompelien) at Roberts, Montana. Mrs. Huso’s death was not unexpected as she had been suffering from a lingering illness. The deceased was a daughter of Ole and Siri Kompelien, pioneers of the Westerheim neighborhood.

Vikings Victorious

Playing the first of a championship series with Canby for the Southwestern Minnesota League pennant, the Minneota baseball club took their visitors by a score of 4 to 1 Sunday. The game was characterized by close fielding and air-tight pitching support, although Minneota’s hard hitters couldn’t seem to get their stuff past the infield. Spanton, pitching the game for Minneota, allowed six hits and one run, struck out six and walked one.

Cuts foot

Two year old Lorna Severson daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Severson of Nordland township, cut her foot badly in a grain elevator while playing around the farm yard on Monday. The laceration required a dozen stitches to close the wound.

Dero-Szarzynski

A beautiful wedding took place on Monday, August 17, at the Church of St. Edward in Minneota, when Miss Maire, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis P. Szarzynski, of Taunton and Lawrence, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Dero were united in marriage.

50 Years Ago-Aug. 24, 1967

Car wash is beauty parlor

When Michael Moorse began “prettying up” his cows on Monday for the forthcoming Lyon County Fair his grandfather’s (Harold Friend) car wash was the perfect place to start the beauty treatment. So, he hauled them to town for a wash and a rinse and the cows seemed to enjoy it as much as did Michael. Assisting him with the animals was his father, Leo Moorse.

Gets $50 reward for finding billfold

A Minneota youth is $50 richer this week and has a clear conscience. The young man is Aaron Esping, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Esping, who found a billfold containing $200 in front of a hotel in which he was staying while at the Luther League convention at Seattle last week.

Lincoln fair winners

Two rural Minneota 4-H club members, Joseph and Michael Fier, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Fier, came home winners from the Lincoln County Fair, which ended its run Sunday. Joseph won a grand championship with the gilt and will exhibit the animal at the Minnesota State Fair. Michael was named top swine showman and, because the winning barrow, it was thought, would be too big by that time, his barrow was named as alternate for showing at the 4-H market and sale in September.

The Jefferson Street Band in rehearsal

This band will providing music for the street dance that will be held Saturday, September 12th, during the Boxelder Bug Days celebration. The members are Greg Novotny, Steve Larson, Dane Nordquist, Jim Christianson and Scott Josephson.

25th Wedding Anniversary

Jim and Carol Driemeyer of Minneota celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house on August 29th at the Driemeyer residence.

St. Edward’s Catholic School Principal

Mrs. Carol DeSmet is spending time at the school getting ready for the new term. She replaces Sister Grace Maertens who retired from the position last year.

Public School Principal starts job

Mr. Jerry Weber is the new Elementary Principal at both Minneota and Canby, a position that is half-time at each facility.

Winners of the Ladies’ Club Tournament

Members of the Countryside Golf Club took part in the Ladies’ Club Tournament this past Sunday. Flight winners were as follows: Clara DeRoode in the fifth flight, Val Blair in the fourth flight, Donna Hess in the third flight, Marney Gislason in the second fight and Monica Appel in the first flight. Lonna Stensrud claimed the Club Championship with Elaine Buysse and Dorie Teigland tying for second, with Buysse winning the play-off.
