Hennen siblings drench KMS
It was raining three-pointers Thursday night in Kerkhoven.
And most of the downpour was coming from Thomas Hennen. Hennen, a senior, scorched the nets from three-point range 10 times in only 15 attempts en route to a career-high 40 points to spark Minneota to a 79-56 Camden Conference victory over KMS.
Younger brother Jacob Hennen, a sophomore, added four threes and finished with 26 points overall on 10 of 14 shots. Between the siblings, they outscored KMS 66-56.
There were 25 made three-pointers total between the two teams. And they shot them well, too. Minneota sank 15 of 26 (56 percent) while KMS drained 10 of 20 (50 percent).
“I hit my first three, and then I missed the next one,” said Thomas Hennen whose previous three-point high in a game was seven.
“Then I hit a couple in a row. That’s when I could feel it might be a good night.” After his three-point total reached nine, someone on the Minneota bench informed Thomas Hennen of his total.
“It kind of got in my head (to make 10) after that and I missed a couple in a row,” he laughed. Thomas Hennen also finished with nine rebounds, four steals, four blocks and two assists, while connecting on 15 of 22 shots in all.
And his shots weren’t raining from one particular spot on the floor. They came from the top of the key, each wing, and even one close to NBA range.
The Class A top-ranked Vikings remained unbeaten and held an opponent under 50 points for the seventh time this season.
“There’s a little bit of pressure (being unbeaten),” said Thomas. “But we had that in football, too. I like that pressure, though. It makes you work harder.”
The upset-minded Fighting Saints led 7-6 early in the game before Minneota went on a 9-0 run and never looked back; leading 38-22 at halftime.
Logan Sussner had a team-high 15 rebounds to go along with six points and three blocked shots for the Vikings.
Jared Josephson had two points, three assists and four steals; Nolan Boerboom had a three-pointer and three assists; Alex Saltzer had four assists and three rebounds; and Jacob Hennen also had four of the Vikings’ 16 steals.
For KMS, Weston Gjerde had 14 points, Reagan Carlson 12 and Ethan Hauge 10. Carlson had four three-pointers and Gjerde three.
