(Result Saturday, Dec. 30)
Hills-BC 71, Minneota 65
Minneota was unable to hold onto a 12-point first-half lead and succumbed to Hills-Beaver Creek 71-65 in the second day of the Southwest Minnesota State University Holiday Invitational Saturday morning at the R/A Facility in Marshall.
It was the first loss of the season for Minneota after starting out with eight straight wins.
"We played well for three quarters of the game," said Minneota coach Chad Johnston. "We knew we weren't going to go unbeaten this year; there are just too many good teams out there. But we shouldn't have let this one slip away."
Both teams had similar shooting statistics, each hitting six 3-pointers and the Vikings making two more field goals than the Patriots. Minneota, however, was whistled for 20 fouls to only seven for HBC, which had only one foul called on them in the first half.
The result was the Patriots making 13 of 19 free throws, while Minneota was 3-for-3.
"(HBC) is a young team (just one senior) and we have a lot of senior leadership, yet we were the group that panicked," Johnston said. "They switched to a 1-3-1 defense, which we have seen from teams before, but we just couldn't handle it this time."
Minneota led 35-27 at halftime and increased its lead to 37-27 on a bucket by Sawyer Desmet, who finished with 16 points, 13 rebounds and three steals.
Peyton Sheik had 13 points, Max Rost had a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists, and Ryan Dalager had 10 points, eight steals and six assists for Minneota.
The Patriots slowly whittled away at the deficit and eventually knotted the game on a basket by Micah Bush with 5:38 remaining. Max Rost gave the Vikings the lead back on a layup, but was quickly whistled for his fourth foul at the other end at the 4:46 mark and was relegated to the bench for a brief period.
HBC then went on a 7-0 run and never looked back. The Patriots took their first lead of the game, 57-56, on a three-pointer by Cameron Allen with 4:37 left. Jamin Metzger, who led HBC with 21 points, scored inside and Allen capped the run with a pair of free throws.
Dalager then turned a steal into a layup to make it 61-58 with 3:20 to go, but the Vikings would get no closer the rest of the way as HBC cashed six of eight free throws down the stretch.
