Mental errors lead to downfall at Monte
It’s not the physical errors committed in a game that bothers J.D. Pesch.
It’s the “mental errors” the coach has a tough time accepting.
Filling in for Coach Keven Larson, Pesch watched the Minneota Vulture American Legion team drop a 9-4 game at Montevideo Thursday night.
“You’re going to make errors in a game — but the I don’t like the mental mistakes,” said the coach.
“Things like not covering home on a wild pitch,” he related.
The Vultures fell behind 4-0 right off the bat when Montevideo rapped out four singles in the first inning.
They tried to play catchup the rest of the game, but they’d dug too deep a hole.
“I’ve been telling the guys for years, you’re going to make errors. But it’s those mental errors — that’s not what we do.”
Austin Sorensen tripled in the second inning and Tate Walerius singled him in for the first run. It would become the first of three hits for Walerius, who knocked in two runs.
Sorensen got his second hit, a single, to knocked in a run in the fifth — with Walerius knocking in the other run.
A pair of Montevideo errors led to another run in the sixth.
But Monte’s Jackson Snell was just tough enough on the mound, fanning nine hitters, to keep any more Vultures from scoring.
“We didn’t play terrible — but you don’t give up three runs. It could have been different if we weren’t giving up runs,” said Assistant Coach Matt Moon.
“We just came off an intense high school year and I want them to relax, but they need to be mentally into the game. Maybe by the end of the summer we’ll get there,” said the coach.
