Isaac Hennen got the handoff from Cole VanOverbeke in the 4x100-meter relay.

Only Dreitz remains; but two records set at state

Two of Canby-Minneota’s relays finished back in the pack in the Class A State Preliminaries on Friday at Hamline University — yet, both set school records.
“There are a lot of fast people down here,” said Coach Sara Hemish. She added, “The results weren’t what we wanted, but they still set school records. And they competed well.”
The Canby-Minneota girls stood in the track infield after they’d run, still trying to catch their breath, and looked up at the time clock.
The 4x200-meter relay team finished 15th of 16 teams, but RyAnn Hansen, Makenzie Hemish, Kalli Jelen and Lizzy Gillingham ran a 1:48.84. The old mark, which they set a week earlier in the section finals was 1:49.34.
And the boys 4x200-meter relay team composed of Carter Wente, Cameron Anderson, Jared Josephson and Isaac Hennen also set a school record at 1:33.35, despite also finishing 15th of 16 relay teams. Last week they also set the school mark at 133.41 in the sections and ran a 1:33.35 in the state.
“They may not have qualified but they came down and competed hard, and that’s what we’re proud of,” said Coach Hemish.
The bpoys 4x100-meter relay team finished 16th of 16 teams in :45.58. Team members are Carter Wente; Anderson, Cole VanOverbeke and Hennen.
Wente also had a tough 110-meter hurdle run, finishing nineth of 16th of 19 runners. But his time of :16.29 was .2 better than the time that got him into the state meet.
Norah King also had a rough outing in the discus. Her first toss went out of bounds, her second went 109-11 and her third hit the netting and bounced away.
She didn’t qualify for the finals with her 109-11. The best toss was a 130-8 by Julie Overton of Lac qui Parle Valley. King had come into the meet with a 119-10, which was second best in the section next to Overton.
The only Canby-Minneota track member competiting on the final day of competition was Grace Dreitz. The Canby eighth grader finished the 800-meter run in 2:19:13 to qualify for the state finals. Ava Hill of Mesabi East ran a 2:12.11 for the best time and Dreitz was fifth.
She bested the mark of 2:22.42, which got her into the state meet.
