Race of the brothers
You know how it is — brothers like to outdo each other.
So when the pack in the 400-meter dash Thursday at Redwood Falls rounded into the final turn, the race was on between Minneota brothers Jared and AJ Josephson.
It's taken senior Jared some time, but he's emerged as a premier runner for the Canby-Minneota track team and one of his specialties is the 400-meter run.
So it wasn't surprising when he headed into the final 100-meters in front.
But there, right behind him was little brother, A.J. Well, he may be a freshman, but he's not so little. The 6-2 youngster was literallly, "Following in his brother's footsteps."
They finished the race one-two, Jared in :53.38 and AJ second at :54.38.
Oh, by the way, Minneota's Riley Buysse wasn't far behind in :58.66 to take third.
Jared Josephson also won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:11.98.
The Josephson brothers were one of the highlights of a day when the varsity and junior varsity races were mixed together, stringing out the re-scheduled meet that was to have been held on Tuesday.
In fact, they teamed up to help the 4x400-meter relay win a title. The team of Jalyn Ufkin, Tristan Bierchenk, AJ Josephson and Jared Josephson finished first in 3:45.
Both the Canby-Minneota boys and girls won their meets. The boys took first with 226 points with Redwood Valley way behind at 194.5 followed by Marshall at 130.5 and Wabasso at 80.
The girls also won with 246 points over Redwood Valley's 171. Marshall was third at 123 with Wabasso fourth at 54.
In a spring filled with rain, snow and cold weather, it appeared the Canby-Minneota tracksters were just happy to get back on the field.
And they did it with one year on Monday's True Team Section 3A Boys & Girls meet scheduled for 4 p.m. The winner will advance to the State True Team Meet.
