Vikings second; Two win titles
Minneota entered the far-away tournament called the Mike Fasnacht Memorial because, as Coach Joel Skillings said, "We missed so many meets (because of the weather) and wanted to get our kids more experience."
When the dust cleared, the Vikings were second in team standings out of 10, behind only Class AAA Shakopee, 229.5 to 161.
Two Vikings captured championships, Senior Shawn Buysse at 170 pounds and freshman Jackson Esping at 285.
Taking second were Teddy Pesch at 132. Cole VanOverbeke at 152. Ironically, both Pesch and Jonah Gruenes entered at 132 and Gruenes finished third.
Also in third place for Minneota were: Kade Lozinski at 120; Blake Reiss at 138 and Layne Lozinski at 195.
Fourth place finishes for the Vikings were: Zack Fier at 106; Eric Carrasco at 113 and Josh Laleman at 160.
Trey Gronke at 220-pounds with fifth and Tate Walerius didn't place. The Vikings forfeited the 126-pound and 182-pound weight classes.
BUYSSE got a bye, a pin in 3:29 in the second round and beat Jack Casey of Shakopee, 5-0 in the championship.
As for ESPING, he pinned his way to title in 3:42; 1:10 and 35 seconds over Lee Drahota of Jackson County Central.
VanOverbeke, who was ranked No. 1 at 152 pounds got the finals with a pin and tech fall win but lost to Marcus Otoma of Dover-Eyota, 7-5 in the championship match.
Otoma is ranked 7th at 160 pounds in Class A.
