Vikings steamroll MACCRAY, 56-0
After having its game with MACCRAY on Friday night postponed because of frequent lightning strikes, Minneota then returned the next day and struck down the Wolverines 56-0 on Saturday in Maynard.
"I've never been involved in a game postponed because of weather before," said Minneota coach Chad Johnston. "I've coached in a couple that were delayed by lightning, but nothing like this. It just kept lightning the whole time we were there."
Field conditions were favorable following the previous day's rain.
Ryan Meagher rushed for 143 yards and three touchdowns in only 14 carries as the Vikings (5-0), despite turning the ball over three times, scored in every quarter in another big offensive output.
Minneota, which extracted five turnovers from MACCRAY, has now outscored its five opponents 244-48.
The Vikings amassed 418 yards of offense, while limiting MACCRAY to only 82 total yards.
"It was nice to get some turnovers," said Johnston. "That was a key part of the game. It was a matter of people being in their right spots in most cases. We started out in a three-man front and blitzed a little, but we played a four-man front the rest of the way and that worked out better for us."
Minneota turned the ball over on its first possession of the game, but got it right back when the Wolverines fumbled on their first play from scrimmage and Adam DeVlaeminck recovered at their own 34-yard line. It took just six plays to travel the 66 yards for a score. Meagher rushed four times for 44 yards in the drive, including a four-yard TD run to give the Vikings a 7-0 lead.
After the Wolverines turned the ball over on downs, Minneota scored again, this time on a four-play, 65-yard drive with Meagher taking it to the house from 18 yards out. The drive's big play was a 30-yard pass from Ryan Dalager to Sawyer Desmet on the right flat with 1:01 remaining in the opening quarter.
Other than one early series when the Wolverines drove into Vikings territory on a 12-play drive to the 35, Minneota's defense dominated in the first half.
Minneota scored three times in the second quarter for a 35-0 halftime cushion.
Following a 32-yard punt return by Brody Larson to the Wolverines' eight, Destin Fier took it in for a score with 8:01 left in the second quarter to make it 21-0.
Keaton Jurrens then intercepted a pass on MACCRAY's next series and the Vikings started the drive on the Wolverines' 33. Five plays later, Meagher scored on a five-yard run with 5:15 to go in the half for a 28-0 advantage.
Three minutes later, it was 35-0 when Minneota's Parker Bradley then scored on a "pick six" down the left sideline from 36 yards out to cap the first-half scoring.
Midway through the third frame, the Vikings increased the lead to 42-0 when Dalager and Desmet teamed up on a 58-yard scoring strike.
On its next series, Minneota scored again on a three-yard run by Andrew Lipinski to take a 49-0 lead into the final quarter.
The Vikings' fourth interception of the game, this one from Chase Johnson, resulted in another "pick six" from 14 yards away.
Dalager completed 6-of-13 passes for 147 yards. Sawyer DeSmet had three receptions for 64 yards, while Max Rost had two for 73 yards.
The Vikings had 262 yards on the ground with eight different players getting at least one carry.
Destin Fier had 12 tackles, including a sack, to go along with an interception. Parker Bradley finished with 11 stops and an interception. Desmet and Eli Gruenes also had a sack.
Minneota hosts Lakeview for Homecoming on Friday night.
